I now realize that despite all evidence to the contrary, this is the prevailing thought in our culture. Many people even believe that the Gospels were created in the s by influential men at church councils in order to give themselves legitimacy and solidify their own importance. And how early were they written? But the existing manuscripts are not our only evidence for dating the Gospels. There are plenty of clues within the New Testament texts themselves that can inform us as well. One such clue is the omission of some very significant events that were highly relevant to the Gospel accounts.

Gospel [note 1] originally meant the Christian message, but in the 2nd century it came to be used also for the books in which the message was set out; in this sense it includes both the four canonical gospels of Matthew , Mark , Luke and John , and various apocryphal gospels dating from the 2nd century and later. The four canonical gospels were probably written between AD 66 and Many non-canonical gospels were also written, all later than the four canonical gospels, and like them advocating the particular theological views of their various authors.
A gospel can be defined as a loose-knit, episodic narrative of the words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth. John and the three synoptics in particular present significantly different pictures of Jesus’s career, with John omitting any mention of his ancestry, birth, and childhood, his baptism , temptation and transfiguration , and the Lord’s Supper. Each gospel has its own distinctive understanding of Jesus and his divine role. The synoptic gospels represent Jesus as an exorcist and healer who preached in parables about the coming Kingdom of God.
He preached first in Galilee and later in Jerusalem, where he cleansed the temple. He states that he offers no sign as proof Mark or only the sign of Jonah Matthew and Luke. It records his performance of several miracles as signs, most of them not found in the synoptics. The Gospel of John ends: “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.
Like the rest of the New Testament , the four gospels were written in Greek. In the immediate aftermath of Jesus’ death his followers expected him to return at any moment, certainly within their own lifetimes, and in consequence there was little motivation to write anything down for future generations, but as eyewitnesses began to die, and as the missionary needs of the church grew, there was an increasing demand and need for written versions of the founder’s life and teachings.

The creation of a Christian canon was probably a response to the career of the heretic Marcion c. Irenaeus of Lyons went further, stating that there must be four gospels and only four because there were four corners of the Earth and thus the Church should have four pillars.
The tradition that held sway for more than a millenium was that the authors of the four gospels were who their titles say they were, and following the fourth-century.
Jump to navigation. Dating the gospels is very important. If it can be established that the gospels were written early, say before the year A. If they were written by the disciples, then their reliability, authenticity, and accuracy are better substantiated. Also, if they were written early, this would mean that there would not have been enough time for myth to creep into the gospel accounts since it was the eyewitnesses to Christ’s life that wrote them.
Furthermore, those who were alive at the time of the events could have countered the gospel accounts; and since we have no contradictory writings to the gospels, their early authorship as well as apostolic authorship becomes even more critical. None of the gospels mention the destruction of the Jewish temple in A. This is significant because Jesus had prophesied concerning the temple when He said “As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down,” Luke , see also Matt.
This prophecy was fulfilled in A. The gold in the temple melted down between the stone walls; and the Romans took the walls apart, stone by stone, to get the gold. Such an obvious fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy most likely would have been recorded as such by the gospel writers who were fond of mentioning fulfillment of prophecy if they had been written after A.
Also, if the gospels were fabrications of mythical events, then anything to bolster the Messianic claims – such as the destruction of the temple as Jesus said – would surely have been included.

The author, a physicist who acknowledges his Roman Catholic training and inclination to believe, uses only the gospels themselves [and Acts] to gather information about the order in which they were finally written down, and the likely ranges of dates during which they must have been written.
He does this by comparing the similarities and dissimilarities of more than a hundred verses in Matthew, Mark, and Luke – as well as some in John. Some verses do suggest a writing later than 70 A. While in keeping with church history, this conclusion goes contrary to the many thousand high criticism scholars [among them many conservative and brilliant church theologians] who have developed contrary conclusion over the past two hundred years.
